Decking Materials

A Wide Variety of Options

Traditionally built from pressure-treated pine new Decking Materials have come on the scene in recent years. Although the most economical decking material, features of other materials may outweigh their added cost. Explore deck designs built from a number of materials at the Somerville Deck Center and imagine the possibilities of a new outdoor living space.

Deck Building with Pressure-Treated Lumber

The affordability and longevity of pressure-treated lumber have made it the number one deck building material for over fifty years. It is still the most economical material available. Easy to work with and readily available, the biggest drawback is the maintenance required to keep it looking good. Pressure-treated decks will last an average of 15 years if well cared for.

Cedar Deck Boards

Costlier than pressure-treated lumber, cedar is naturally pest and fungus resistant and is easier to care for. When left natural, cedar will weather to a burnished silver gray. Like with any type of lumber, time and weather will take its toll, even with judicious coats of sealer applied. A cedar deck will last 25-40 years, if properly maintained.

Ipe Deck Boards

Ipe (e-pay) is the crème d le crème of deck materials. This Brazilian hardwood outperforms every domestic wood species in the U.S. With a usable span of 35 years, Ipe outdistances every other material except for some composite deck boards. Beautiful, almost knot-free, and impervious to water and insects, Ipe is the best there is, though it has a price that is twice that of cedar.

Deck Building with Wood Composite Material

For ease of maintenance, choice of colors, textures, and wood patterns, composite deck materials have become almost as common as natural lumber. Comprised of recycled wood and plastic, composite deck boards are as renewable as wood. Priced closer to cedar deck boards, the money saved on maintenance can balance the higher cost. The lifespan of composite wood decking is within 25-30 years.

Building a Deck with PVC Composite Material

Almost as expensive as Ipe and with a lifespan of at least 25 years, PVC and PVC composite deck boards are replacing wood composite products. Available in colors and finishes that mimic natural materials, composite decks need very little maintenance to keep their beauty.

Composite deck building materials stocked at the Somerville Deck Center include Azek, TimberTech, Trexand Wolf. Made from PVC or PVC composites (depending on the brand), life expectancy of decks from these materials is 25-40 years. All brands are on display at Somerville Deck Center in Bridgewater and Flemington, NJ.
